Nature vs. Nurture

Why was this even a debate? You can still hear them pontificating, schools holding debates under the guise of challenging the moral philosophy of nature versus nurture.

A person's 'nature' is a lagging indicator, while nurture is the input and the environment. This debate often carries an implied meaning that 'nature' possesses the 'moral quality' of 'good.' Is that truly so? Or does nature just mean 'inherent traits'?

If this discussion forces me to adjudicate between a feedback loop and a one-way street—where a child's genetic predispositions can actually evoke different types of responses from their environment—then how can anyone endorse building habits or behavior? It's also too lazy to imply that everything is complicated, that there is no black or white, and that we need more data points to cut nature versus nurture into 100 tiny segments. Let's be opinionated and push this: 80/20.

While there is some science to genetic predispositions, I refuse to rely solely on this as the lever of an argument, because I don't want us, as humans, to strip away our responsibility for our impact on others and on the world.
